Cooking at home is a big part of every family’s life. You don’t need to spend too much money on fancy gadgets. What really helps is having the right tools that make cooking faster, easier, and less stressful.
Here are 10 most useful kitchen products that every home cook should have, along with some budget-friendly buying tips.
1. Pressure Cooker:
A pressure cooker is the most useful product/ tool for Indian kitchens. From dal, rice, and sabzi to rajma and chana – it cooks everything quickly. Choose size of the pressure cooker according to no. of family members, Don’t go for too big, it will waste gas. Brands like Hawkins and Prestige are durable and pocket-friendly. Steel cookers are stronger than aluminium ones, though aluminium is cheaper.
2. Non-Stick Frying Pan:
Perfect for omelettes, parathas, pancakes, dosa’s, chilla’s and stir-fry. It uses less oil and makes cleaning easy. Don’t buy cheap non stick pans as coating may peeled off , which is very dangerous for health. Go for a good quality pan with a transparent lid.
3. Stainless Steel Kadhai (Wok):
For curries, frying pakoras, or making halwa, frying puri’s a heavy-bottom steel kadhai is best. Avoid thin steel kadhais, as food burns easily. Choose medium weight, 2–3 litre size for family use. Prefer Stainless steel kadhai as it is better than non-stick for kadhais because it lasts longer.
4. Sharp Knife & Chopping Board – Small Tools, Big Difference:
Cutting vegetables with a blunt knife is tiring and unsafe. A good sharp knife with a chopping board makes vegetable prep much faster. Buy a knife set with 2–3 different sizes for different tasks. Wooden or plastic chopping boards are safe. Avoid using glass chopping board – they looks aesthetic but damage knives.
5. Mixer Grinder (Mixie) :
From grinding chutneys to blending smoothies and making masala pastes, a mixie is a true all-rounder. No middle-class kitchen feels complete without one. A 3-jar mixie (wet, dry, chutney) is enough for most families. Don’t buy heavy-duty models unless you need them – they take more power and space. Good affordable brands are Bajaj, Philips, and Maharaja.
6. Spice Box (Masala Dabba) – The Heart of Indian Cooking:
Every Indian dish starts with masala. A spice box with 6–7 small containers keeps all the daily spices in one place – haldi, mirchi, jeera, dhania, garam masala, etc. Instead of searching through 10 jars, you can just open one box and have all spices ready. A simple steel masala dabba costs around ₹400–600 and lasts forever. Plastic ones are cheaper but not long-lasting. Choose one with transparent lids if you want to see spices easily.
7. Tawa (Flat Pan) – Everyday Essential:
No Indian home can run without a tawa. From morning rotis and parathas to evening dosas, a tawa is used daily. For rotis, go for an iron tawa – it heats evenly and makes soft chapatis. For dosas, use a non-stick tawa or cast iron tawas . Always season iron tawas with oil before use so they don’t rust.
8. Storage Containers – Keep Your Kitchen Tidy:
AWith labelled containers, you don’t waste time finding which jar has sugar and which has salt. kitchen often has dal, rice, atta, sugar, spices, and namkeens. Without good storage, things get messy. Containers keep everything neat and organised. Buy sets of 10–15 containers. It’s cheaper than buying one by one. Steel lasts long, plastic is affordable, and glass looks modern. Transparent containers are best for everyday use.
9. Tea Kettle or Saucepan – Used Many Times a Day:
This is one of those small but important items. From morning tea to boiling milk, from making Maggi to heating soup, you will use it every single day. In many homes, the saucepan is used more than any other utensil ! A 1.5–2 litre steel saucepan is enough for daily use. Don’t go for expensive electric kettles unless you need one.
10. Serving Spoons & Ladles:
From stirring sabzi to serving dal, spoons and ladles are basic but very important. Without them, cooking and serving becomes very messy. Imagine trying to serve sambar with a small spoon – impossible! That’s why ladles are must-haves .Stainless steel sets are strong and affordable. A set of 6–8 pieces is enough for cooking and serving. You don’t need designer ones – simple ones last long.
